Navigating Menopause

Navigating Menopause

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life, marking the end of her reproductive years.

While it is a physiological transition. For some, it can introduce a range of challenging symptoms… turning what should be a natural process into a significant life upheaval.

Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a holistic approach to managing menopausal symptoms. Addressing not just the physical but also the emotional and spiritual aspects of this transition.

Perimenopause; the transitional phase leading up to menopause, can be particularly tumultuous.

As the body adjusts from the cyclical changes of menstruation to the steadier state of menopause, any pre-existing “imbalances” in a woman’s body will be amplified during this time, manifesting as symptoms such as hot flushes, abnormal sweating, sleep disturbances, mood changes, fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, low libido, heart palpitations and more.

The extent of these imbalances determines a woman’s experience during this life stage, explaining why menopause affects women differently and why some navigate this transition more smoothly than others.

Chinese Medicine views these imbalances as primarily stemming from the gradual depletion of Kidney essence and over expenditure of other essential substances throughout a woman’s life.

According to TCM philosophy, human health hinges on the balance and preservation of these vital substances. Including Qi (energy), Yin, Blood, Jing (essence), and various bodily fluids.

When women “overspend” their reserves, it means they deplete them at a rate faster than they can naturally replenish.

This depletion can occur due to various factors such as poor diet, excessive physical or mental exertion, emotional stress, or environmental factors.

By avoiding activities or habits that accelerate this depletion and instead adopting practices that support the preservation and replenishment of these substances. Woman can maintain better overall health and well-being during peri-menopause, menopause and beyond.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine offer effective means of addressing both the underlying causes and symptoms associated with this stage in a woman’s life. During a consultation and treatment, dietary and lifestyle advice may also be provided to complement the treatment further.
