Our lead practitioner and clinic owner, Zara, is trained in a specialised field of orthopaedic acupuncture, called Musculoskeletal Acupuncture.
Every skeletal muscle has a motor point, these are points where motor nerves innervate from the spine to activate a muscle. This is essentially what causes your muscle to either contract or relax.
A muscle can become inhibited from injury/trauma, overuse, incorrect posture etc. When it is inhibited, the muscle is not ‘firing’ correctly, and the motor point message from the spine to the muscle is no longer a smooth signal.
Musculoskeletal Acupuncture aims to restore this signal, to ‘jump start’ or ‘reset’ the inhibition and restore optimal function. By stimulating the motor nerve, we encourage the muscle to ‘reset’ to its anatomically appropriate length/state of tension. This can allow for more blood flow, eased inflammation, increased range of motion and reduced pain.
Musculoskeletal Acupuncture sessions involves a full case history of your injury, including manual muscle testing and palpation, postural and range of motion assessment. The treatment will then include some massage/soft tissue work as hands-on palpation further allows your practitioner to identify inhibited and knotted tissues.
From here, the muscles that are ‘inhibited, knotted, tense etc.’ have a gentle low-frequency micro-current via the acupuncture needle to influence the motor nerve of the muscles. This is a very safe, very controlled method and is often only applied for a few seconds to minutes.
You will rest for a small amount of time under the infrared heat lamps to encourage further blood flow into the tense muscular areas. Once the practitioner returns, more massage is often performed in addition to other ancillary tools if indicated such as cupping, dry needling etc.

Practitioner of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
Zara is the founder and lead practitioner of Rebalance Wellness. She has been in the health industry for over 15 years, beginning her journey as a massage therapist in 2008. Since this time, she has nurtured a fascination for wellness, the human body and all things natural health.
She studied full time at RMIT University for 5 years to complete her double degree of Chinese Medicine and Health Science. She graduated at the top of her class in 2015, completing the degree with an intensive internship at the Nanjing Hospital of Chinese Medicine where she lived, worked and immersed herself in the traditional medicine in Nanjing China for four months.
After graduating she travelled throughout Nepal and Europe before settling in North Africa, Morocco. She based herself in the small seaside town of Essaouira, where she worked side by side with a General Practitioner for over two years.
Since returning to her practice on the Mornington Peninsula, she has continued to nurture her clinical skills with a strong dedication to research, specialised trainings, and extensive clinical hours.
Zara’s own experience with autoimmune disease has given her a depth to her treatments, allowing her to really empathise with those dealing with chronic conditions or barriers to the healing process. She emphasises the importance of self-care and how to empower those she treats to nurture their own health in a sustainable and enjoyable way.
She is grateful every time she steps into the treatment room, feeling most at ‘home’ when helping her patients. While she warmly welcomes everyone into the clinic, she has a passion for helping people with pain disorders/injuries, digestive issues, stress and emotional conditions, women’s health and fertility.
